I Love Dr. James!! (In a wholesome way, of course!)

Okay. I'm back. Yes, it is 9:52PM and I'm just now sitting down at the computer. For those of you who faithfully check in on me here at my little blogspot, I apologize for the delay. I'm sorry I didn't even get on to update my Proverbs for the day! What can I say? It's been rough! Thank you so much for your prayers for my tooth! As you can see by my heading, I have Dr. Brian James to thank for it! I wish he had a website so I could link you to him, but it's still in the works, so my words will have to suffice.
He is an endodontist (specialist in root canals) who has opened his practice fairly recently. He graduated from Hendrix college in Conway, Arkansas - the same school my Aunt Kathleen attended. My Dad also went there for a short time! What a small world! Anyway, he did root canal #1 on tooth #31 (for those of you who know anything about dentistry...I'm finding out that I'm learning quite a bit through all of this...) on Dec. 27th. I go home, I feel better but still hurting. I called him on Sunday and told him the pain was still bad. He said - okay, here's the great part - he said that he would come in today, Dec. 31st, to see me, even though his office is closed!!!!! Is that great or what? My Mom arrived on Sunday afternoon, so she stayed with the kids today, and Terry drove me the one hour-ish drive to Lakeway and there was my hero- Dr. James and his wife! They were great! He did root canal #2 on #30 for me today on his day off. And let me tell you, it cost a fortune, but WHO CARES!! The pain is gone!!!!!!
Now, for those of you that might be thinking "Valerie, what do you do? Eat candy and drink cokes all day long? Chew on rocks for fun? Do you never brush???" I'll tell you that no, I do none of the above, well, I mean, I don't eat candy and drink cokes all day, and I do brush! On Dec. 17th I went to my regular dentist, who is very good, and had a crown on #30 and a filling in #31. However, I've been known to have very "tall" nerves in my teeth. These nerves extended up too close to the said crown and/or filling therefore causing immense pain for me! So, please, put aside any ill thoughts of my diet or dental hygiene. I do my best, but ya can't help the way you were made!
Laci is better, but still on the fussy side. I'm extremely numb. I told Dr. James (whom I now have on speed dial) that the worst part about dental work is not being able to talk during the procedure! For those of you who know me, you know that I speak the truth! :o) It's hard for me not to talk!
I hope you all have a very happy New Year's Day!! I'll be posting tomorrow, Lord willing, on my New Year's resolutions. (I just LOVE the New Year!! I love the idea of starting anew!) Hope to hear from you soon!
Oh, and if you're ever in the blessed hill country and need a root canal, I can hook you up! ;o)

A Prayer Request

Sorry I've not been posting lately. It's been a rough week for me. Last Sunday I was in terrible pain from a toothache. Naturally, being the week of Christmas, I could not get in to see a doctor until Thursday. He did however, call in an antibiotic and a prescription for Vicadin!!! I've been feeling so bad, and all this from a toothache, that I've done only what has been necessary to survive: Food, clothes and path. Food for my family, clean clothes and a path to walk through the house! I had a root canal on Thursday, and now another tooth (two were bad and the dr. had a hard time telling which one was worse!) is bothering me. On Christmas night, Laci was up screaming all night. We took her to the doctor and she has an ear infection!!!
Laci is doing much better now, but I'm not. Anyway, I know this sounds so silly, so minor, but could you please pray for my tooth? I don't know if I can bear the thought of another root canal, and my budget is telling me the same thing!
Thanks so much for your prayers.

P.S. This reminds me of how every member of the body is important, even something as small as a tooth! As a church body, every member is important from the oldest to the youngest, richest to the poorest. Well, maybe I should save this idea for a later post! Have a good weekend...and be sure you go for your regular dental checkups! :o)

To Find My Heroes, I Look No Further than My Breakfast Table

A man told my husband that he was wanting to write a book about three of his heroes. All three were preachers. I thought to myself "That is really wonderful! But, if I write a book about my heroes, I wouldn't need to look further than my breakfast table to find them."
My heroes as a child, were Ron and Carolyn Courtney, my Dad and Mom. They are not pioneers, or war veterans, but they made an ordinary life, extraordinary. They brought joy to the mundane happenings of life. They brought peace to a chaotic world. For this, they are my heroes.
My Dad never made it very far up the "ladder of success". He worked as Director of Field Services for the American Cancer Society, and later the American Heart Association. This meant that he traveled the state of Arkansas and organized local fund raising boards. He was a great speaker. He taught the boards how to organize and follow through with fund raising campaigns, such as, "Jump Rope for Heart" and many others. Once he and Mom came to know Christ, they no longer went to the parties that were hosted by the "big wigs" in these fund raising organizations. He quit doing this because they served alcohol, and Dad would not associate with that lifestyle in any way. This forced him into the shadows of the business world, and therefore, he never made it into the boss's chair. Because he said "no" when the world offered him success at a high price, he is my hero. He spent many hours reading to me about the Presidents. I loved history, and he did, too. He took me on walks in the summer. We each had our own "walking stick" and we enjoyed looking at our neighbors' well manicured lawns and noting their new riding mowers! We smelled the honeysuckle in the air and he told me stories of his childhood. He took me on long bike rides, and he would take my bike apart and lubricate it every year and then proudly stand back and say "She'll go like greased lightning, now Valerie!" And he was right. He took me to teen activities, the library, and to my monthly orthodontic appointments. He read the Bible aloud to my Mom every morning. He loved me when I would get a bad attitude, and he was so proud of me when I achieved a high score on a test. For all of this, he is my hero.
My mother was blessed to have the favor of men and women alike in her chosen field: education. A brilliant student herself, I am convinced that she could have become a college professor if she had desired. Instead, she taught special education. She was, and is, tenderhearted. Her heart broke when a mentally disabled or retarded person was laughed at, or made fun of. I am not as naturally tender hearted as she, but watching her tear up over seeing someone mistreated has made me much more sensitive to the feelings of others. We never called someone "a retard" as a joke in my house. We never made fun of those who were handicapped or poor or disabled. She taught me that it was by God's grace that we had the intelligence, money and abilities that we have. For this she is my hero. She taught me that "life and death are in the power of the tongue". (Prov. 18:21) She spent many hours explaining to me that words can help or hurt people, and that mine often hurt others. She worked long hours teaching, and often stayed after school to tutor students who were struggling. Then, she came home to cook supper, do laundry, write letters, lesson plans, and grade papers. She rose early, and went to bed late. It was a rare evening that she ever put her feet up to relax. She was always doing for others. She never missed her Tuesday night soul winning time. She worked hard at teaching her 3rd Grade Sundays School class. She made us eat breakfast - and supper - together. For all of this, she is my hero.
When I married at age nineteen, I had already been witnessing some amazing examples of character and integrity. I had no idea that I'd be witnessing even more of that in the life of my husband.
He got his first job at age fourteen because his bike was broken, and he needed to earn money to have it repaired. He could have asked his parents, or grandparents for the money, but he didn't. He got himself up every morning at 4:30 and delivered papers on foot. For this, he is my hero.
He watched his father face many battles in the ministry, yet he gave his life to serve in the ministry as well. He didn't get bitter. He is my hero.
In Bible college, he had to install his own lavatory in the dorm! He faced very primitive conditions as the college got on it's feet, yet, he didn't quit. He's been criticized and judged wrongly by others, but he doesn't get angry or quit. He keeps going. He is my hero.
He has many abilities and talents, yet he is humble. He gives his all when he could get by with less.
He studies God's Word, and tries to live it. He's honest. He's not a hypocrite. If we have a disagreement over something before services, or if he even just snaps at me, he will apologize before he preaches. He wants to be right with God, and with man, or in my case, woman! For all of this, he is my hero.
I am so thankful that my heroes are not just people I know about, but people I know.

Merry Christmas!

I'm so thankful that He came so long ago, and that I know Him now.

Merry Christmas Everybody!

A Little Update...

Well, I feel like most of the pressures of Christmas are past! I have finished most of my shopping - one more gift for Terry to buy - and I am through homeschooling until after Christmas!!!! YEA!!! I am going to make my visits, get my stuff for Super Church ready, and make up some Christmas goody bags for my Super Church kids today.
I wanted to tell you my progress this past week on my exercise...(clears throat) I didn't do very well. I was thinking about lying to you and saying how great I did at exercising in the midst of Christmas chaos, but then I realized that lying is wrong...so I must be honest - I bombed this week. I did walk over a mile at Lakeline Mall last night, does that count? But, then I ruined that be eating a Hershey's pie at Burger King after we were done. I am going to try to work out today, but I don't know if I'll be able to. I'll let ya know.

Anyway, on a brighter, more cheerful note, here are a few pics of my kids in case my niece Amber in Florida is tuning in, or in case you, a possible total stranger, would be interested in them!

My laundry is a lot of fun!

Mitch had to join in on this! He was pushing her around in the laundry hamper!

Leslie is my little helper. She has to be right at my side whenever I'm cooking!

She also loves to dress up!

Lauren wasn't too happy about Mitch falling asleep on her shoulder during our last trip home from Arkansas, but she put a smile on fast when the camera came out! She's like Blair Warner, I guess. (Inside joke for Melanie)

My Favorite Movie Experience

It's a Wonderful Life is my all-time favorite movie. I posted the ending here, so if you have a minute, stop and watch the results of a life lived for others. It so often feels like we are accomplishing very little as we serve the Lord, our families and each other. But, when those hard times come, it is then that we see that we really have made a difference. I know George Bailey is a fictional character, and he certainly wasn't a perfect role model, either! But there is something in him - the fact that he's human I guess - that I can relate to. This movie isn't just entertainment, it's an experience. Don't just watch it - live it!

Have a Merry Christmas, dear reader! I hope I can make a small-and beneficial- difference in your life this year. Hearing from you makes my day. If you are reading this, and I haven't met you, please comment with your name and state. I'd love to know who happens to stop by, but whether you wish to "sign in" or not, I want to say thanks for reading! I hope and pray this blog isn't just fluff - I hope it can make a difference.

Jude 22 And of some have compassion, making a difference.

Making Christmas Merry!

Here is a rundown of the events and activities of our family during the last week. Man, has it been busy! Oh, and this post is lovingly dedicated to Pamela~ ;o)

Merry Christmas from the Basham Family!!

Below are the photos of our December ladies fellowship. We met at the Highlander Buffet restaurant here in Burnet. We had a really good time.

Here is Sandra - she just recently joined our church!
Caroline and Margaret enjoying the good food!
Isabelle, Doris and Kathy enjoying each other!
Ann and Evelyn - Smile! You're on Life in the Hill Country!!

Just so you know I was there, here I am! :0)

Every year I try to make a homemade gift for each family in my church. I am not a great cook, and I cannot sew. This limits me greatly. Therefore, I rely on "crafty" ideas. You know, little crafts that have pretty simple instructions that even I can do! This year, I made lollipop ornaments.

Step one: Gather supplies. You need the metal lids from juice concentrate. This is the candy part. You'll also need craft sticks (for the handle), acrylic gloss paint in the colors of your lollipops: I used real red, real green and white. You'll also need pink. You'll need a flat brush or a stencil brush. You'll need a 10-12 inch square of cellophane for each lollipop you make, some ribbon to tie it with and some gold cord - about 7 -12 inches per ornament.

Step 2: If you're handy with tools, then drill a hole in the top of each lid using a 3/32 drill bit. If you're not, have your husband do it!

Step 3: Paint each lid the color you desire. You'll need to do several coats, letting them dry in between.

Step 4: Dab your sponge brush into the pink paint, blotting it till almost dry. Then, dab on some pink on each side of the lid for cheeks. CHECK! Be sure the hole is at the top center before putting smiley face on lids!

Step 5: After the pink paint is dry, take the end of a water color or small paint brush and dab a dot of white paint on each pink spot - at the top. This will be where you'll be beginning your smile.

Here are the ornaments right before I drew on the smiley face.

Step 6: If you're doing the peppermint ornaments, you'll draw in the red or green for the peppermint on the white lids at this time.

Step 7: Draw smiley faces on each ornament.

Step 8: Glue craft stick on back of lid - be sure again that the hole is at the top center! Glue only about 1 1/2 inch of stick to lid.

Step 9: Cut out squares of cellophane, and a length of ribbon. Wrap cellophane around ornament , gathering it around the bottom and tying with ribbon.

Step 10: Poke hole through cellophane where the hole in the lid is. String with gold cord and tie a knot.

You can label the back of each ornament with your name and the year. Do this before you wrap it with the cellophane!

Tada! The finished product! What a relief! I think they were a big hit.
I couldn't resist getting one more picture with my prized project! Lollipop anyone?

Laci's birthday was a lot of fun. I can't believe my baby is already one year old! Where did the year go? I did a much simpler cake for her than for the other kids' first birthdays. Since they can't understand or appreciate it much on their first birthday, I just do something easy for me. As they grow, I do harder ones. I did Laci's cake with Cool Whip for frosting. I got this idea from my friend Amanda!(See my post "Good Friends are Forever") I loved it! It was easy, and tasty!

Happy Birthday, Sweet Girl!
Hmmm...this isn't too bad!!
She really loved her birthday present...come to think of it, all the kids loved it!
She's on the move now!

It's been a busy month so far, and Christmas is still a week away! Yikes! I've still got so much to do. I'm trying to relax and enjoy the Christmas season, but it's hard. I'll be working on that...oh no! Did I say "working?" I mean, I'll be resting on that! ;o)

Have a Merry Christmas, everybody!

God Can Speak to a Teenager

Teenagers are kind of silly. It's an awkward age. They are in between childhood, and adulthood. They're dealing with raging hormones, insecurity, "finding themselves" - and oh, let's have them make the most major decisions of their lives too! It's a hard time.Bro. Graham used to say that teenagers "were dumber than a box of rocks." They are. They think they know everything, and in reality, they know very little! Only two things helped me to survive my teen years unscathed: 1. The love, and patience, of my parents. 2. A relationship with the Lord. I knew my parents loved me, and would always be there to help me navigate my way through those major decisions. But as most teens are, I was a little, okay, a lot independant! I wanted to find the answer to life's big questions myself . I wanted the Lord to show me the answer. What I found out impacted my life forever.
Most of my "boyfriends" were pen pals. They all lived in other states. Bro. Graham preached to us teens that you shouldn't just date for the sake of dating. You should look for qualities in a date that would be suitable for a future mate. In other words, he was saying it was dangerous to date a guy you worked with that didn't go to church, who drank and lived a lifestyle that was opposite your own - you may get attached to that person, marry him and then be forced to live a life that you know is not pleasing to God. Because of this, I took "dating," which in reality was really just "writing," very seriously.
When I was 17 I was "dating" a guy from a boys Ranch. [Attention: This means I was desperate!] He came highly recommended by my Pastor, and I don't think my parents were too concerned since he lived 500 miles away! He had a rough way to go during his young life, but he seemed to be on fire for the Lord, and doing right.
Because I took dating (writing) so seriously, I prayed a lot about my future husband, and I talked to the Lord about this guy. One thing that bothered me, was his past. I felt guilty for judging a guy's past, but remember, I was thinking "future husband!" I was bothered by the scar in his left ear where he had worn an earring at one time. I knew he had done other things in his past that leave scars on the heart as well. This bothered me, because I came from such a loving, and pure home.
I was pretty innocent back then, and I hope I still am! I prayed like I was talking to my parents. "Lord, whatdya think about him? I don't like the scar from his earring. Am I being picky or what? Can ya please show me? I don't wanna mess up my life." Guess what. He showed me.
I'll never forget that morning when I was reading my Bible, and God gave me an answer. Not my pastor, or my parents, or my big brother, but ME! He showed me that this was NOT the guy for me. I have the passage marked in my Bible, and it is very dear to me. I'd like to share it with you.
II Samuel 22:21-25
The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury
These verses stood out to me like they had been highlighted in yellow! The Lord was using this passage to give me an answer from Heaven. He told me, that while I was far from perfect, I had chosen to keep myself from the wickedness of the world. I was a pure young lady. I had kept myself from alcohol, and wild living. I needed, and wanted, a man who had done the same with his life. And this passage was my promise from God to give me such a man.
Now, for the rest of the story. I'm far away from my teen years now. I can barely see them in the rear-view mirror of my life, but I can remember them. I remember that day when God spoke to a teenage girl about her future mate, and Lord willing, I'll never forget it. I've been married almost a decade. I married a man who is like me: he's not perfect but, he's pure, he came from a good home, and he loves the Lord.
That guy that God steered me away from? Last I heard he was headed to prison.
Thank you, Lord, for speaking to a teenager. Thank you that you're still there for me today.

Rahab Gives Me Hope

Rahab is not a pristine Bible heroine like Ruth, Mary or Esther. She was a woman of ill-repute, a harlot. She was not even a Jew. But I like her! Maybe because I can relate to her. No, I was never a harlot, but my sin condemned me to an eternity in Hell nonetheless. It didn't matter to God that my sin was rebellion, instead of fornication. All sin is wicked, and unless we accept God's free gift of salvation, we will all pay for our sins - no matter what they are - in a place called Hell. Because of this, I can relate to Rahab. Here are some things I like about Rahab.
1. Rahab was a sinner. She had a bad reputation. In Joshua chapter 2 we see that Joshua has sent two spies into Jericho. They go into the house of Rahab for safety. In verse 2-3 the spies are spotted coming into the city, and immediately the king sends his men to Rahab's house. Of course, I believe the king knew of Rahab's reputation, and figured that she perhaps enticed these men to her home. Rahab did invite them in, but not for the reasons the king had assumed. How often do we misjudge someone because of their past? "Well, you know how she is!" We say to one another. Maybe she's changed!! Maybe we should give folks the benefit of a doubt. I try not to assume anything bad about anyone. Even if I want to, I try not to! The king did it, and he misjudged Rahab.
2. Rahab had heard of the God of Israel, and she feared him. When I first heard of the power and greatness of God, I feared him too.
Joshua 2:9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
10For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
3. Rahab asked to be spared, but she didn't just ask for herself. She begged for the lives of her entire family. When I got saved, I wanted to tell everyone, so they could accept this wonderful gift too. I want my friends, family, and even total strangers to know that through Jesus, they can be spared! They don't have to go to Hell. Rahab wants her Mom, Dad, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, everybody - to be spared.
Joshua 2:13-14 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token: And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
4. Rahab is a beautiful picture of the Cross.
The spies tell her that they will protect her, she is to only hang a scarlet rope out of her window, and her home will be spared. This rope is a picture of the blood. When I got saved from sin, Jesus moved in. He placed His blood over my sin, and now, when God looks at me, He sees the blood. He doesn't see my sin anymore. Now, that doesn't mean that I don't sin anymore, oh no. I wish I didn't, but when I do sin, the blood is there to cover it up. What a blessing!
That scarlet rope is the spies way of escape. The blood is my way of escape, I have escaped Hell through Jesus blood! Hallelujah!

The thing I like best about Rahab is the end of her story. The spies kept their word. They spared Rahab's entire family. But it gets better. Rahab accepts the God of Israel has her God, she gives God her life, and she becomes part of the lineage of King David! Matt. 1:5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;
Now that's a happy ending! Jesse was the father of David, and David was in the lineage of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Jesus allowed a no- good, rotten harlot to be in his blood line. I find that amazing. It gives me hope. I'm no-good. I pretty rotten. But, maybe God can use me, too.
You see, God doesn't care how smart you are. He doesn't care how many "big name" people you know, or the size of your bank account. He doesn't care if you can sing, or play an instrument. He cares about one thing: your heart. Do you fear Him? Have you received Him as your Savior? Will you give your life to Him, to use as He will? He can do great things, just look at Rahab!

You Can Keep Me Accountable

I appreciate all the kind words regarding my exercise endeavors. I just wanted to give you guys an update...you all are my accountability!
I have set my goal to work out three days a week. I need to start out slowly, and work back up to the five days a week that I used to do. I am not very concerned with the number on the scale, though I do try to keep an eye on it. Mostly, I want to feel strong and fit.
This week I achieved my workout goal! I love Denise Austin videos, I have about 11 of them that I've gotten over the years. This week I used her kickboxing (killer) video, and her Bounce Back after Baby video. The Bounce Back video is definitely a workout, but not nearly as strenuous as the kickboxing video! I like Denise's positive attitude. She says over and over on various videos, that fitness is not about being a skinny mini, it's about being healthy. I like that outlook. She talks a lot, which is okay with me :0), but if you don't like that, you can mute her! Also, her music isn't overpowering, it blends in nicely in the background.
Okay. This week is over. I'll let you know how next week goes. Of course, the holidays will be hard, but I'll do my best. You can help keep me accountable!
Have a great weekend, everybody!

I Choose To Trust

How many of you wish that some things in your life were different? Well, I do. I have several things that I wish I could change. I have lots of problems that I wish I could fix myself, in my own way.
I chose to marry the man that I did. I love him, he's wonderful. Is he perfect? No. Do we ever disagree? OH YES! In fact, some of our "discussions" make me very unhappy. If I wanted to, I could just say "Forget it. I'm packin' up. See ya." And be on my way. You could too. However, I choose to stay. I choose to love him in spite of his faults. Oh, and he does the same with me.
I sometimes get lonely, and dissatisfied with my "life in the hill country". I try to be content with the state that I'm in, but there are times when my heart longs for home, for friends, family and the comfort of familiar surroundings. I choose to look on the bright side. I choose to find the good in living on the "backside of the desert" with rattlesnakes, grass burrs, fire ants, and cacti. Nearly everything here bites or stings. I've had two run-ins with scorpions. Boy, are they nasty little creatures. But, I can find the good if I look for it! I enjoy living in a small, quiet town. I enjoy walking into the library and knowing the librarians by name, and vice versa. I like having Subway right up the street! I enjoy the mild winters. My kids can play outside in short sleeves or a light jacket most of the year. There are some positives, but sometimes I have to choose to see them because the negatives are shouting at me, with bulging eyes.
I have a loving Heavenly Father who placed me in this spot for a reason. He provides for me. Everything that comes into my life is first placed through the filter of His love for me. Nothing happens to me because God is "out to get me." But there are times when I cower in fear, awaiting His wrath to strike me down. I'm tense, and nervous, wondering what terrible thing is going to happen next? It is during these times that I have to choose to trust. It doesn't come naturally, I have to choose to do it. I choose what to fix for dinner, I choose what to wear each day (for several people!), and on and on. Life is a series of choices, in fact, our life is a result of those choices.Therefor, we must choose wisely, according to Scripture! What if you've blown it already by making a wrong choice? Then choose to be happy, and walk with the Lord, and trust in Him to help you right those wrong choices.
When sorrow has come into my life, I usually haven't been ready for it...but I made it. Why? Because I chose to trust Him. He's always been there, and praise the Lord, He always will be.
I don't know what will happen today or tomorrow or in ten years. I can imagine some pretty awful things. But I won't. I choose not to! I choose to look up, I choose to trust.

Wow! That Was Hard!

I'm really out of shape! Yesterday, I did the Denise Austin Kickboxing workout, and let me tell you, it was hard! I felt great - when it was over! I'm pretty sore today, so I'll do something easier like walking or an easier workout video to give my muscles a rest.
The exercise made me feel so much better, though. I had energy for the day, and I had that "after workout happy feeling." I'm glad I did it.
The best part was as I was doing the punches and kicks, I could let out any frustration that I had! It was great.
I highly recommend exercise if you want to boost your energy level or get out any anger or frustration that you've been hanging onto. Oh, and it's good for your heart!
Of course, the best thing that you can do for your frustration or for your heart, is have a close walk with the Lord. I'm constantly working on mine. I want to be closer to Him everyday. Reading His Word, talking with the Lord, and then trying to obey Him- that's what I work at everyday. It's a blessing to know that I can call on Him 24/7 about anything, He's never too busy. At the same time, I want to take care of the temple He's given me, so I can reach my maximum potential for Him here.
Feeling blah? Try exercise! It will give you a boost! And thanks for praying for me! :0)

I've Been Feeling Sort of Blah...

For some reason I've been feeling kind of, well, icky lately. I'm sure part of it is that I'm a woman, and part of it is because the Devil wants to keep me in the "icky" frame of mind. I am trying to overcome this. I read my Bible, pray and I try to stay on top of things - and feelings- before they overwhelm me.
I have one more idea to try: Exercise! I used to workout everyday, and then Laci and home schooling won out, so it's been about 4 months! However, I need to get back in the old habit of moving. Because the morning is the best time for me to do this, I may have to post later in the day from now on. Hope you'll still check in, I want to keep in touch.
Exercise helps me in so many ways. 1. It gets my blood pumping and my brain awake. 2. It sends those wonderful endorphins to my brain- the "feel good" hormone - and boy, do I need that! 3. It burns calories! 'Nough said there. 4. I use weights, and that builds muscle, to help me lift my 25 pounder! 5. It makes me thirsty for water, and water is so good for me! I need to drink more of it.
I'm hoping this will help me kick out the "blahs" for good! I'll let you know if it helps. In the meantime, pray for me! :o)

My Greatest Weakness

Proverbs 17:28 says, Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

I am a talker. That has gotten me in lots of trouble over the years. I just want to say to all my friends and family: I'm so sorry for saying things that have hurt you over the years. Thank you for putting up with me, and loving me in spite of myself.
My tongue is definitely my greatest weakness. Every time I read the verse above, I get convicted - okay, anytime I read a verse on talking or the tongue, I get convicted! (See my Proverbs for today)
The Bible says the tongue is a world of iniquity in James 3. In fact, that chapter has a lot to say about the tongue! The tongue is dealt with a lot in the Bible, so I must not be the only one who struggles with this. The tongue must be a battle for all of us. (whew! at least I'm not alone!)
I tried as a teen to change my personality, to suddenly be quiet, so I could stay out of trouble! When I tried it, everyone thought I had a bad attitude! It was then that I realized I can't change my personality. I simply must control it. I still struggle greatly. I would probably cry if my friends wrote in and listed all the times I had said something that hurt them - because I never mean to hurt anyone with my words. But it happens so fast! I must guard my tongue diligently.
I ask of you, dear reader, for two things: 1. Please forgive me if I have ever said something that hurt you. I assure you, I never meant to do it. I need every friend I have, and I need new ones, too. I don't want to run you off!
2. Please pray for me that I will control my tongue better.
I want to "refrain my lips" so that my foolishness will be hidden. Maybe one day I can even be mistaken for a "man [woman] of understanding"! :o)

Some Things I Want to Lay Aside

The new year is drawing near! I love making new year resolutions. I don't always achieve the goals that I set, I but something in me says "Make a goal, try to reach it!"
This year instead of resolutions, I am going to use Hebrews 12:1 as my goal for the year. It says Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
I want to lay aside some "pet sins" this year. Oh, I want to take off 10 lbs., read more books, finally get my photos in albums and other "resolution" type things as well, but mostly, I want to start 2008 with fewer sins in my life than ever before.
Here are some of the things I want to get rid of: (please pray for me)
1. I want to keep all bitterness out of my life forever, but forever starts with 2008. Bitterness creeps in when you're not looking. You can be bitter at an enemy, or at a friend who forgot to invite your kid to her kid's party. I know, I've been bitter at some people that are very close to me. Bitterness is like drinking poison, and then waiting on the other person to die. They don't get harmed by it, you do. I don't want to be bitter at anyone in my family, my church or at any of my friends. (I don't know of any enemies, but I don't want to be bitter at them either!)
2. I want to lay aside the sin of worry this year. It's a battle. I'm a mother, therefore, I worry. I can only achieve this goal by maintaining a close walk with the Lord, and by trusting Him when heartaches - or the fear of heartaches- loom ahead.
3. I want to lay aside myself this year. I want to be self-less, not selfish. That's hard, because I have a certain way I like to do things. I will have to put my wishes aside and give over to others, maybe even to some I used to be bitter at! That's really hard! But again, through Christ I can do it!
4. I want to lay aside pride for 2008- and forever! Pride is terrible. It also creeps in unaware. It looks harmless, but it is one of the seven sins that God hates. (See Prov. 6:16-19) Pride keeps me from getting right with the Lord, or from going to that person that I am bitter at and making things right with them.
These are sins that I have worked to get rid of for quite a while now. I feel just like Paul did in Romans 7:18-20 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
I battle the flesh constantly. I know what is good to do, but when I'm in a situation where I need to be self-less, I see that I'm selfish. When I need to have a lowly spirit, I catch myself having a superior attitude. When I am broke, or a child is ill, I start to worry without even noticing. That is, until the Holy Spirit says "Uh, Valerie, I think you are supposed to be trusting Me." Ouch! I tell the Lord how sorry I am, and that I knew better. And then I get up and try again. He's so longsuffering with me. In fact, I need to be more longsuffering with others myself. That's another one I should add!
I hope I can start, not on January 1st, but on December 8th, to lay aside the weight of my pet sins, and start 2008 lighter than I've ever been before! :o)

Good Friends are Forever

I'm so sorry that I failed to mention in a previous post that our Missions Conference was Dec. 2nd through the 4th! I was unable to post everyday because of homeschooling, cooking and preparing for our services each night.
We had a wonderful conference! We had Jeremy Tyler, and his family, missionaries to Brazil, as our main speaker. The church increased it's annual missions budget by over $5,000! We also took on two more missionaries! What a blessing! The Lord has done this.
I first met Amanda Tyler in 1994 at summer camp!! She lived in Illinois, and I in Arkansas. We saw each other once a year until 1996 and we wrote letters (long before email was available or affordable, I'm not sure which!). We continued writing, calling and emailing over these past 11 years and I was wondering if I'd ever see her again!! We wrote while she was a student at Crown College, after we were both married, and while our families were growing, but never seeing each other. Praise the Lord, we finally got together! I got to meet her husband and their three precious boys!
We just picked up where we left off, or at least I felt that way! I enjoyed their visit so much, but it went by way too fast! I hope and pray it won't be another 11 years before I see her again!
I have another great friend, Dixie, whom I've not seen in over four years! (or is it six?) I have friends in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee - that I keep in touch with, but don't get to see too often. I hate that. I was thinking about it yesterday, about how I seldom see my close friends, and got a little teary. You know me, I get reminiscent very easily! I should call this blog "Going down Memory Lane"! Anyway, I thought about how I don't see most of my friends too often and I realized that I will see them again...someday. I will either see them here, or in the air when the trumpet sounds! We have one grand thing in common: we're saved. We know we'll be in Heaven someday. That is a great comfort. I wrote the following poem to express my feelings (writing is good therapy. Judging by this blog, I've got lots of problems! ;o). Please don't criticize it, I'm no poet, that's for sure. I just want share my heart with you.

When Will We Meet Again?
When will we meet again, my friend,
Our friendship to renew?
Will our visits be abundant,
Or will they be but few?
I so enjoy the time we spend
Sharing in God's sweet gift.
When I'm with you my burdens ease
And my spirit seems to lift.
Our laughter fills my heart with mirth-
With joy and happiness!
I cannot put it into words,
How our friendship gives me bliss.
I know for sure our hearts were knit
By our Savior up above.
He made this bond within our souls
By His redeeming love.
You ask when will we meet again?
This comfort I can share:
If I don't see you here, my friend,
I'll see you in the air!

Eleven years haven't changed Amanda a bit! What a joy to get be with her again! Thank you for coming down, Amanda!
Lauren enjoyed being with Josiah (left) and Jonathan.
Jeremy and Amanda Tyler, Missionaries to Brazil.
The Whole Tyler Gang!
I am praying for you guys to have safety, and to gather your support quickly!
Thank you for everything!

My Home was a Haven

I remember my turbulent teen years like they were yesterday. If you didn't go through some rough, emotional times as a teen then I'd like to shake your hand. I think most of us had a hard time being a teenager. The age between childhood and adulthood is difficult. As you near the "big" age of 18, the pressure just increases. "What will you do with the rest of your life?" Everyone seems to ask. If you do have an idea of what you want to do, chances are it won't work out exactly as you have in mind. That's life.
If I did anything right as a teen, it was having a good relationship with the Lord, and with my parents. Oh, I put them through a lot of late night talks and some tears, but we loved each other. I knew it, and I hope they knew it too. I had plans to marry a certain someone. He turned out to be a fake and a liar. I just want to say "Thank you Lord for not letting me get involved with that guy forever!" It was hard to let go of him, because I had those afore- mentioned plans. I did it though, because I knew the Lord didn't want me to be with him, and I knew my parents didn't.
After the break up, I just wanted to be away from everybody. All my close friends were either married or engaged. I didn't fit in anywhere...anywhere except home.
Mom and Dad were always there. Steadfast in their Bibles (Dad would often read it aloud while Mom fixed her hair for work). Steadfast in their zeal for the Lord - they were genuine, faithful Christians. They were steadfast in their soul winning efforts. They both made telling the lost about the Lord a high priority. They were steadfast in their love for each other. Oh, they had a disagreement or two...who doesn't? But I never feared my Dad and Mom getting a divorce. I knew they loved each other. They were steadfast in their love for me. When this guy was gone, they were there. When my friends moved away, they were there. When I eventually moved away, they were still there if I needed them. I got phone calls, letters, cards and most of all, I knew they were praying daily for me.
My home was a haven. When I broke up with that guy, I stopped going to Taco Bell after church. (Our local church hang out) I went home and enjoyed a Subway sandwich with Mom and Dad and all the love a girl could need. I hope and pray that my home is a haven for my family. I don't want a home that is full of strife, or hatred. I want people to feel our love for each other the minute they walk in the door.
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for making my home a haven.

My Holiday Letdown Response System

I love this time of year. I enjoy some cold weather. I enjoy trying to think up great gifts for friends and family - especially Terry! He's hard to buy for and to surprise! Last year, I shocked him by getting him a bi-pod for his gun. And he thought I didn't know about guns! (Well, I don't, but I'm observant! I saw him eyeing one at the store once!) I love the food, the decorations, the food, the music, the lights, the food...well, you get the idea. I love it all!!!!
The down side is, that when it's time to take down the decorations and lights, turn off the music and start losing the weight from all the food, that I can get very melancholy. I feel like it was all over so fast! I was so excited about it, and then it's over, that fast! I've been looking back at all the photos of past Christmases and I can't believe how much my kids have changed! It's already been almost a year since Laci was born! I guess I'm just "female"! I go from up to down so quickly. And when I get down, it's hard for me to get back up again!
Because I'm aware of my "holiday letdown pattern", the get excited-have the event-get blue pattern, I've developed a "holiday letdown response system." Or, H.L.R.S. for short. My system is simple: have something fun planned to do after the big day! I am blessed to have an anniversary on January 2nd. My Hubby and I try to go out to eat that day, or do something together. But, that sort of blends in with the other holidays, so I try to plan something else after that. Maybe I plan to go to the mall to spend some Christmas money (I hate to admit this, but I don't buy clothes! I usually buy books!), or a trip to the library, or I may plan to call a friend and visit. I plan something. Something that I can immediately shift my focus to after the holidays.
I am also prone to look back at the past all year long. I look back at old photos and think about when the kids were smaller. I think about the friends and family that I never see, I think about my Dad and I feel like I didn't get to have him long enough - though I know others who've lost parents younger than I did, I still wish I'd had him longer. I remember the great Christmases Mom and Dad gave me, and on and on I go until I'm in tears! It's not pretty! But, I've developed a system for those times too! When I feel that way, I remember Phil. 3:13-14 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Now, I know Paul was probably saying that we should forget the mistakes of the past and move forward, and that's so true. But I also have to forget the good times. I can't dwell on the happy memories of yesteryear, because I begin to feel like I'll never be happy again, life stinks, poor me, and so forth. After all, if I stay in that mood, I certainly am not getting anything done for Christ, I'm giving the Devil the victory! No, I have to forget those good times (temporarily) and move forward, making new happy memories, today. Yesterday is over. I'm so glad I got to live it, and there are times I can look back and not feel so blue, but I need to focus on today. What can I do today for my kids? How can I invest my life today so that it impacts eternity? How can I help you today? This is the stuff the Christian life is made of: giving ourselves to Him, so that someday, we can stand in Heaven with no sorrow, no regret, and no "holiday blues" - but with satisfaction of a life lived wholly for Him.

Do you have a Holiday Letdown Response System? I sure couldn't make it without mine!

Worldly Thinking

Here is the devotional that I shared with our ladies at our November fellowship. My Mom wanted to me to share this, so here it is. I hope it is a blessing, and I hope you have a spare hour to read this! :0)

The Lord began showing me some of my own "worldly thinking" shortly after my Dad went to Heaven. At that time I began to think that I should go out and get a degree in case Terry died suddenly. I would need to find a good job support myself and four kiddos! (After all, I certainly couldn’t continue in the family business, could I?) What would I do? Well, my mother, who holds several degrees, pointed out that I was using worldly thinking. She reminded me that God could provide for me, and if I needed a degree, it would be in His timing, not mine. As I nurse a baby, home school two kids and rear a lively toddler, when could I find time to work on a degree? I’m struggling just to write this now! No, I need to just wait and trust Him. There’s nothing wrong with planning for an emergency, it is wrong when we do not seek His face before plunging ahead with our own ideas. He may have another way- a better way, and perhaps, an easier way. But we must trust Him, and go to Him. We cannot possibly plan for every possible circumstance that may come up! We must trust Him, and rely upon Him.
Why do we need to shy away from worldly thinking? James 4:4b says "whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God." I surely do not want to be God’s enemy! I’m also aware that sin begins in the mind. If I keep my thoughts pure, then my life will be pure. It’s definitely a battle for the mind!

Oh, I also want to add that this is not an exhaustive study. This is just the tip of the iceberg. My hope and prayer is that this will be a springboard to an even deeper and more personal study for you. May God help all of us to clean out the cobwebs of worldly thinking that have settled in our minds, and replace them with the glorious sunlight of God's Word!

I.What does the Bible say about the world?
A. Who rules the world? Satan!
Eph. 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
2 Cor. 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Rev. 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

B. As Christians, how should we feel about the world?
The Bible says we’re different, and others should be able to see that clearly. Not just by how we dress, that’s way overemphasized - but by our attitudes and actions. After all, if our hearts are right with God, then will submit to His authority on everything, including our clothing. Get your heart right, and the rest will fall in place, and it won't be hard at all because you'll be sincerely desiring to please Him!
2 Cor.6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
1 Cor. 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
James 4:4b whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

C. How do we act toward people of the world?
We love them! See John 3:16, and 1 John 4:8 & 16

D. How should we live in this world?
Live right, do what’s right. Go to church, read the Bible, pray, be honest, witness, be real, and on and on.
Tit. 2: 11-12 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
E. We love the people, but not the "way" of the world.
1 John 2:15-16 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

F. We should love Him, and the things that pertain to Him!
Col.3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
We can overcome this world.
1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
Your faith is what overcomes this world. You have the power already in your hands, or heart. But which one are you "feeding"? Your faith, or your flesh?

G.Where does it all begin? In the mind!
Do you feed your mind filthy TV, wrong music, bad books? Then you will not be an overcomer! You're feeding your flesh and not your spirit. I don't even watch the news because all the media does is tell you all that's wrong in the world. I want to dwell on what's right - and only one thing fits the bill - Jesus! Let's dwell on Him, and His Word!

Do you use worldly thinking? I think we all do without even realizing it - I know I do, anyway! Remember, we’re in the world but not of the world. We should think according to the Bible. With that said let's try these on for size:

II.The following are some comparisons of worldly thinking to Bible thinking.

The World says: "She (or he) deserves that!"
The Bible Says: We should be forgiving and longsuffering with others.
Eph.4:32And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
Matt.5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Matt.18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
Prov. 24:17-18 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

The World says: "I have to take care of myself, because no one else will."
Are you a child of God? If so, then that’s not true! God takes care of His children.
The Bible Says:
Matt.6:25-26Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Ps. 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Ps. 37: 25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.*Note: What about the beggar Lazarus in the NT? He was saved, yet he was a beggar! I believe the key to this verse is that David said he hadn’t seen the "righteous" or those living right forsaken. Perhaps Lazarus wasn’t living right! Maybe that’s why we see some saved folk suffering financially. Maybe they aren’t tithing, or living right according to God’s Word. Just a thought!
I Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

The World says: "No one can make me do anything."
The Bible Says:
I Cor. 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
I Sam. 15:23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry....
Gal. 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
Matt. 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

The World says: "I'll serve God, but my family comes first!"
The Bible Says: We should put God ahead of all other people in our lives.
Gen.12:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee:
Matt. 19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

The World Says: "Okay, I'll help with (fill in the blank). But I'm doing it my way!"
The Bible Says: We are to submit (which means to abase or humble) ourselves to others, not take over.
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Eph. 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
I Pet.2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
Here's the one that gets me!
Eph. 5:21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

The World says: "No one notices what I do, so why should I bother?"
The Bible Says: We aren't to do things to get man's attention, but we are to serve God out of a heart full of love for Him.
Matt. 6:19-20 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Eph.6:6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
Heb. 6:10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have showed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
Ps.100:2a Serve the LORD with gladness:...

I've Earned $2.21 in Two Years

I was recently cleaning out some of the obscure areas in our home. Areas like our hall closet, our bedroom closet, the pantry and the laundry room. I was cleaning the shelves above my washer and dryer when I saw a wide assortment of little things on the shelf. There were three cherries and a bucket from the Hi-Ho Cherrio game (what was I thinking in buying that game anyway? I bet we've lost all but four cherries by now!). There were three shoelaces...but don't ask me which shoes belonged with them! I also found six safety pins and (drum roll please) all of the loose change that has been found in the washing machine! A grand total of, yep, you guessed it - $2.21! That is approximately $.09 a month for 24 months! Oh! Along with the U.S. money there was also one Brazilian coin that one of the kids had gotten from a missionary, but I didn't figure that in my total! :o) All in all, I'd say that I'm overworked and underpaid, as are all stay-at-home-moms! I think I'll be discussing a possible wage increase with my boss today when he gets home. ;0)
Really, I thought this was interesting. After two years of cooking, cleaning, serving, washing, refereeing, teaching, disciplining, decorating, shopping, "doctoring", loving - I only have $2.21 to show for it...in one sense. If I were seriously looking at the financial benefits to being a stay-at-home-mom, and a home schooling mom, then I wouldn't be doing it! The world has way more to offer me in tangible benefits than this line of work! But I realize that I am getting so much more than the world could ever offer me. No, there's no paid vacation, or sick days, or even a small salary package. But I get the unconditional love and admiration of four sweet children! I got to hear my daughter, and now my son, begin to read!! I get to see their faces light up when some difficult subject finally "clicks." I was there for their first smiles, their first steps, and I was there when they were hurt or sad. I'm there each morning to greet them with a hot breakfast, and I'm there in the afternoon to see them play at the park. I'm there every night to read to them, kiss them and tuck them in their beds. I'm there to spot character flaws and point them out, before they become habits! I'm not out conquering the business world. I don't hold a degree of any kind, unless "Mrs." counts! I know several women who are mothers, in that, they did bring forth children into the world, they have the title "mother". But, some moms, sadly, leave their children with the nanny or babysitter -indefinitely- so they can go fulfil their own "dreams". I'm not trying to bash working Moms, because you can work a job and be an excellent mother, no doubt about it. What I'm talking about is mothers who seem to be able to forget that they even have kids because they get so wrapped up in their own separate lives. It's so sad. I believe "mother" is a noun and a verb! It's work, and love, and more work! I feel that I hold an even higher position than any female CEO in the country - I'm a Mom! Not just in title, but in deed.

There's No Place Like Home....

First of all, thank you so much for praying for our heat to be fixed. It was repaired yesterday at about 10:30 and the minute that heat started blowing we rejoiced! Thank you to Bro. Scotty Bristow for coming over and repairing it for us. Also, my thumb is so much better! I can't believe it is already doing so much better. I appreciate your prayers so much.

I had such a good time during my last trip to Arkansas for the Thanksgiving holiday. Here's Janet Drive, the street on the side of our house. It was so lovely to see the falling leaves!! It's something we don't see down here in autumn. We have the Live Oak trees here and, oddly enough, they lose their leaves in the spring! I couldn't resist snapping the photo below. It's kind of relaxing, don't ya think?

Here is my nephew, Andrew. He is holding, well, trying to hold Laci! Melanie's boys loved her so much!
Here is David Allen, Melanie's oldest boy with Laci.
The three Musketeers! L-R: David Allen, Mitchell and Andrew
Here I am with the three little ones. L-R: Leslie, Laci and Stephen
My Mom bought new pajamas for the grandkids. These five here spent the night at Mom's house on pallets on the floor(For you Andy lovers out there, they called it "adventure sleeping"). Terry and I and the little girls stayed at a motel. Lauren was the only girl, so she didn't get Spiderman PJ's! She loved her penguin pajamas though! They all had a blast!
Here's the whole gang: L-R: David Allen, Andrew, Stephen, Lauren, Mitchell and Leslie (who's trying unsuccessfully to hide. She's the shy one.)
A proud Aunt! Here I am with the cutest clan in the world! Okay, I'm a little prejudiced! :o)
Leslie was a busy girl during our trip. She was always trying to fold blankets, or help Mom fold towels. She also enjoyed coloring! Her baby doll Lucy is beside her. Lucy has seen better days, as you can see!
Stephen, Melanie's youngest boy, just adored Laci! He kept asking her if they could have Laci for Christmas! He would come up to me and say "Valry, I love your baby!" and then give her and me some kisses! He's a sweetie! He was such a good "babysitter". He kept Laci happy so I could visit with my Mom and Melanie.
The kids had so much fun together. Uncle Walter took all the older ones to the park three times, and the weather was nice enough for them to play outside.
Here's one of my three sweet nephews! I sure miss him, and the whole family.
David Allen and Mitchell had matching Spiderman pajamas, which, by the way, came in very handy those two nights the heat was off!

Lauren and Stephen enjoying the building blocks.

Valerie and Terry ~ still in love after all these years!

We had such a great holiday. Thank you, Mom, for treating us to such a great time. I made memories that, Lord willing, will last my lifetime.
We don't have lots of money, or a fancy car. We don't have designer clothes or a bass boat, but we are so rich. We have a loving family and a home that is truly a haven from the stress and turmoil of this world. We have a great home because we have Jesus! The song says: "With Christ in my vessel I can smile at the storm" and for a child of God that is so true! No matter what is happening in my town or around the world, I can smile at the storm because I have the giver of peace with me each and every moment. Even during the times of no heat, and painful burns, I have so much to be thankful for!
